Al-Hussein mosque is one of the wonderful sacred Islamic sites in Egypt and it is dedicated to Hussein who is the grandson of Prophet Mohammed. It is famous for housing the oldest Holy Quran complete manuscript.
Al-Hussain mosque is located in a very popular district next to Khan El-Khalili Bazaar and that is why it is visited by lots of tourists from all around the world. It is a masterpiece that guards the head of Hussien who was killed by the Umayyads in 680 in Iraq. The Umayyads were known to be the successors of Muhammad against the claims of Ali, his son-in-law "The Father of Hussein".
The struggle between those generations over the caliphate caused lots of schism within Islam. The majority of the Muslim World’s Sunni didn’t recognize the Umayyads Caliphate and they offer forbade anyone to reach the office of Ali’s line. The Partisans of Ali who are called “Shia” didn’t accept any leader except if he is a descendant of Ali and they eventually considered Hussein to be a martyr. The majority of Muslims in Egypt nowadays are Sunni and Hussein is regarded to be a popular saint beside the granddaughter of Prophet Muhammad, Saiyda Zeinab.
Among the most interesting things that you may find there next to the shape and size of Al-Hussein mosque is the two huge umbrellas that are placed there to protect Muslims who are praying outside the mosque during hot summer and they are also used to protect Muslims during winter from heavy rainfall. They are operated electronically and have the design of such umbrellas in Saudi Arabia.
There are so many other mosques and Islamic sites that can be visited while being in the capital of Egypt, Cairo and you need at least a whole day to be able to cover the majority of the amazing historical, cultural, and religious sites that were left there to narrate all about the culture and the ancient history of Egypt so make sure not to miss any of them during your Cairo day trips.
